Education and Community Engagement (ECE) is one of three program directorates in the UNAVCO organization and our primary work is in support of the NSF GAGE Facility. ECE staff are responsible for advancing geodesy and geosciences through efforts aligned with education, workforce development, and outreach.

Donna leads a team of professionals focused on supporting community technical training and educational materials focused on geodesy. Previously, Dr. Charlevoix was the Director of the Science & Education Division of the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment). She is co-author of a university textbook: Severe and Hazardous Weather, An Introduction to High Impact Meteorology and is an Adjunct faculty member of the University of Illinois in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences where she was on the faculty for 12 years.
Anika is an experienced scientific researcher who is dedicated to increasing inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in science. She credits her own experience with an NSF funded Research Experience for Undergraduates(REU) program as a major factor in her decision to pursue graduate school. In the following years she served as both an REU graduate student mentor, and program coordinator. Anika brings her unique background and perspective to UNAVCO’s RESESS and USIP programs. She is also an evergreen member of the UNAVCO Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) committee.
Scott has a background in hydrogeology, and extensive experience teaching as adjunct faculty and writing about geoscience as a freelance journalist focused on climate change. Scott leads outreach through UNAVCO's social media presence, news stories, and other science communication efforts.
Shelley brings over 20 years of instructional systems design expertise to the UNAVCO ECE program (14+ with UNAVCO). She has a Masters of Education in Instructional Systems Development and a B.S. in Earth Science/Geophysics. She is the ShakeAlert® Geodetic Education Coordinator to the USGS ShakeAlert® project serving on the Joint Committee for Community, Education, and Outreach. Shelley also leads secondary education efforts, co-developing modules that incorporate coding in geoscience hazards learning, and collaborates with staff to develop geodesy-related data products and data tools. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Human Dimensions, focusing on the human dimensions of natural hazards and disaster resilience. Shelley also serves on the education committee for Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP).
Beth has a background in both geoscience education and geomorphology, with a special interest in geohazards learning. She has expertise working with students and instructors from K-12 to undergraduate levels, as well as informal educators. Since late 2011 she has led UNAVCO's initiative to increase the quality and quantity of undergraduate curricular items featuring geodetic data for both introductory and major's level students - both in the classroom and the field. These resources and supporting instructor professional development opportunities can be found on the GEodesy Tools for Societal Issues (GETSI) website. Beth has also been a co-PI on three EarthScope education projects, most recently Alaska Native Geoscience Learning Experience (ANGLE).
Kelsey has over 5 years experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and currently manages the Geo-Launchpad internship program. As a first-generation and former community college student she is passionate about helping students succeed. Kelsey also assists in ECE website maintenance including creating and maintaining the UNAVCO Short Course webpage and occasionally assists with OpenTopography creating video tutorials helping users access and download data.
Melissa has worked for UNAVCO for 10 years supporting not only ECE and the internship programs, but also several other departments within UNAVCO. As the ECE Administrative Assistant, she helps keep things running smoothly and in a timely, well-organized manner.
